Advantages of having the digital driving license

While the old generation driving licences still function, having the new digital licences has some advantages to it. These may include:

  • The micro-chipped driving licence comes with an installed point system. This can work to your benefit or loss. NTSA will use these points to punish or reward you depending on your conduct as a driver. They will deduct points each time you commit a traffic offence, which can lead to eventual licence suspension. On the other hand, if you have been an outstanding driver, the points will increase in your card. This information will be available for any potential employers or insurers, thus raising your chances of getting a job.
  • The digital licence will also carry information such as your vehicle ownership status, number plate of your registered vehicle, etc. This way, theft and fraud will greatly reduce because it will be close to impossible to duplicate or manufacture false information on the NTSA database.
  • Lastly, your driving history will be available to all future employers and insurers. It will therefore act as proof of your prowess as a driver.

Steps to follow

Now that you understand the importance of having the digital licence, here are the steps to follow for your application.

  1. Go to your computer and log in to your NTSA portal. You can do this via eCitizen or through your TIMS account.
  2. Now search and choose the ‘Driving licence’ option. Click on the ‘Apply for smart driving licence’ on the drop down menu.
  3. Now fill in the details requested and confirm those that are already pre-filled. If you already have a registered vehicle then your details will appear on the form. However, you might need to update some information including your blood group and eye colour.
  4. After filling everything, click on the ‘next’ button. This will redirect you to the payment part.
  5. The new digital driving licence fee is Ksh 3000, Ksh 50 for convenience charges and Ksh 60 for the MPESA transaction. You will thus need Ksh 3110 in your MPESA account.
  6. Now follow the provided instructions and complete the payment. Make sure to print out the invoice.
  7. Now go back to the ‘New digital driving licence’ dashboard and click on ‘book appointment.’ Choose a date and time that you will be able to visit the nearest NTSA office.

At the NTSA offices

Visit the NTSA offices on the date you booked. Make sure to be there before 8.30 a.m. to avoid queues. Make sure to carry the invoice for the payment. You will then have an NTSA agent to guide you with the remaining part of the application. These include taking biometric details, photo submission, and confirmation of payment.
