How to Update Your KRA PIN to iTax online

Learn how to update your KRA PIN to iTax using the following procedure.

It has become mandatory for Kenyans with an old ITMS Personal Identification Number (PIN) to update to iTax.

The Kenya Revenue Authority recently upgraded the tax collection and management system from Integrated Tax Management System (ITMS) to the new iTax System.

Even those applying for a new PIN must apply for a KRA PIN using the iTax option. All previous PINs issued manually or through the ITMS system must be updated and registered into the new system.

Email Verification Using the OTP

When it comes to entering the email address, make sure that the email has not been used by anyone else.

Be sure that you can access it at the moment because an email verification code (“One Time Password”) will be sent to it.

Enter the email you want to use and click on the button labelled “Send OTP.” Open and check your email for an email from KRA with the message OTP For Email Verification. Add another tab so as not to close the iTax one.

You can leave things as they are, but if you do so, you will be missing one crucial final stage. This is creating your first time iTax login password.

Creating Your iTax Login Password

Log in to your email and you will find your PIN and password that have been generated on iTax.

Open the iTax portal again and input your PIN, password, and arithmetic calculation. In some areas copy-and-paste is disabled so you will have to rely on manual entry. For the tech-savvy, you can do a drag and drop.

A new page will appear that will let you change your password as well as create a security question. Make sure you do not forget your password.

If you have more questions, you can visit the KRA’s Facebook page and ask your question there.

Questions & Answers

Question: KRA gives me this message when am trying to update my details: Value Added Tax Registration Date cannot be before Income Tax Resident Registration Date. What do I do to reconcile the conflicting VAT and ITR dates?

Answer: There is a problem with your PIN. This means when you registered, you were given the VAT obligation which is for business people. If you do not have a business linked to your PIN, you should have been assigned Income Tax Individual obligation. What you should do is that you should not try to update it. Draft a letter requesting for removal of VAT and accrued penalties and then take it to any KRA station. They will remove the VAT obligation and then after that, you can be able to update your pin. After updating, remember to file your returns and be doing so once a year before June 30.

Question: Can I be able to apply for a new KRA pin if I have not updated my previous pin?

Answer: You cannot have two KRA pins. So what you are supposed to do is to update the pin you were given. If you are having issues updating, consult the relevant authority.

Question: How do I get an already existing pin without necessarily going to the KRA offices?

Answer: The other only option is to scan both sides your original ID and then using your personal email, you send the scanned ID to callcentre@kra.go.ke. You can also engage them using their Facebook page or official Twitter handle. They will respond to your question and send the pin to you. Make sure you have a working email.

Question: Regarding updating kra pin to iTax, how do I update my profession? Eg. The major group, subgroup and minor group? You are given options in each category

Answer: You should start with the major group, select what is very close to what you do. Then proceed to subgroup and do the same and finally open minor group and select what is relevant to what you do.

Question: My KRA pin has two names instead of three. What could be the problem?

Answer: There could be a number of reasons and most probably human error. The solution is to go to your KRA station and request them to include the missing name.
