How Much Does a US Passport Cost? 2021 Passport Fees

Passport Costs and Fees?  A common passport question for sure in 2020.  You have your travel all booked and realize you need a passport.  How much does a passport cost anyway?  Well it depends on the type of passport service you need to apply for how quickly you need to get your passport processed and there are a few additional items you might wnat to consider.

Let’s take a deep dive into the costs of a passport.

The most common type of passport is a first-time or new passport or a lost/stolen passport.  You are an adult US citizen and have never had a passport before.  If this applies the fees are as below.

Next up, is a passport renewal.  This applies if you had a US adult passport and now need to renew it have it in your possession and it was issued within the past 15 years.

Here the various fees for passports explained

Acceptance Agent Fee: The acceptance agent, which is typically a post office libary or clerk of the court.  These indviduals are authorized to “adjudicate” a passport application which is somewhat like witnessing the application.  They will verify check the identity of the applicant, review the documents provided and witness signatures.  This is required for new adult passports minor passports and to replace lost passports.  The fee is $35 and is paid at the time you visit the clerk or postal worker.  Fee can be typically paid via cash, check money order and somtimes a credit card.

New Passport (for adults age 16 and older): For a new adult passport book: $110 application fee and a $35 execution fee. The new total fee is $145.  If you want to expedite at a post office you can pay an additional $60 fee to return the passport in 4-6 weeks.

New Passport Cards (for adults age 16 and older): The application fee is $30 and the execution fee is $35. The new total fee is $65.  Again, this is only if you want a passport card but you’ve never had a passport before. If you already have a passport, use Form DS-82 to apply for a passport card by mail and avoid the execution fee.

Passport Renewal for Adults: If you’re renewing by mail, the fee is $110.  If you want to expedite through the mail the fee is $170

Passports for children under the age of 16: The application fee is $80.00 and the execution fee is $35.00, for a total of $115.00.

Passport cards for children under the age of 16: The application fee is $15 and the execution fee is $35. The total cost is $50.
